of Sotogrande
The history of Sotogrande begins in the 1960s
Sotogrande is now in its seventh decade and the vision of its founder, Joe McMicking, an
American Filipino who had married into the immensely wealthy Zobel family in Manila, is
very much intact and thriving. McMicking had sent his frontiersman, the charming
Freddie Melián, to find the perfect piece of land to fulfil his dreams of a private and
unique development on the Southern Spanish coastline. It is not surprising that it was
love at first sight with Sotogrande; unspoilt Mediterranean coastline at the mouth of the
River Guadiaro, cork oak forest stretching inland from the beach interspersed with
clusters of Mediterranean pine and abundant wildlife with magic birds such as the
hoopoo, the jay, the roller and woodpecker.
